BIOLOGICAL REASONS FOR THE CAUSE

causes of pcod
  1. The female body has both female hormones, estrogen and progesterone as well as small number of male hormones, androgen. Under normal condition, male hormones are usually less than female hormones. But in pcod, the level of male hormones rises which affects the ovulation cycle occurring in females.
  2. This hormonal imbalance leads to irregular periods, facial hair growth, acne, weight gain, heavy hair fall, hirsutism and sudden mood swings.
  3. Ovaries contains follicles which are small sacs that contain eggs. Normally, each month ovary release one or two egg into the uterus when they get matured. This is called ovulation.
  4. In polycystic ovarian disease, the eggs in follicle do not mature and are not released from ovaries.
  5. These unmatured eggs form a layer called cysts inside ovary, which prevent ovulation.
  6. The lack of ovulation alters levels of FSH ( Follicle stimulating hormone ) and LH (Luteinizing hormone ) which controls ovulation.
  7. Pcod can be caused mainly due to genes, inflammation and insulin resistance (the cells in body does not use insulin efficiently).
